A wall-mounted folding table created a comfortable place for family meals in a kitchen too small for a conventional table with legs. It provides a useful everyday surface without permanently taking up valuable floor space.

Choose a table that fits the room

The tabletop used here measures approximately 40 inches wide and 18 inches deep. It is mounted about three feet from the floor and comfortably seats two people.

The best height and size will depend on the room and chairs. Before choosing a table, measure the available wall, walking path, chair clearance, nearby doors and appliances, and the space needed for the tabletop to fold flat.

Low-backed, stackable chairs were chosen specifically for this setup. They tuck beneath the raised table and can be stacked in a corner or stored in a closet when more open space is needed.

Create an everyday dining space

The table normally remains raised and is used like any other kitchen table. It provides a place for two people to enjoy dinner, hold serving dishes, and complete homework while meals are being prepared.

Without it, this kitchen would not have enough room for a table. Mounting the surface to the wall removed the need for permanent table legs while still creating a comfortable place to sit together.

Fold it away when more space is needed

The tabletop is easy to lift and lock into position. To lower it, the supports fold inward and the top rests flat against the wall.

Although it usually stays open, folding it down makes deeper kitchen cleaning easier. The open floor beneath it can be reached easily when mopping or cleaning along the wall.

Use it thoughtfully

The table comfortably supports meals, serving dishes, homework supplies, and other ordinary tabletop items. Heavy concentrated loads, such as cases of bottled water or a large watermelon, are kept elsewhere.

The table should be installed according to its directions using mounting hardware appropriate for the wall, and its stated weight limit should always be followed.

Keep the system easy to maintain

After more than two years of regular use, the table has remained secure and functional. The surface is wiped clean after meals or at the end of the day using a dishcloth and warm, soapy water.

A folding table does not add square footage, but it allows one small area to serve several purposes. In this kitchen, an unused section of wall became a place for meals, homework, serving food, and spending time together—without permanently sacrificing the floor.
